I don't know a lot about closed loop systems, but I would guess that siphon during a loss of power wouldn't be an issue?

Question. Closed loop inlets do not need a stand pipe correct? I was thinking the 2 main 1.5 inch inlets for the closed loop could be 6" up from the bottom and in 2' from the sides of the tank. This would put them 4 feet apart.
I would have to run a screen of some sort to not suck in any critters of course.
The question is, is this acceptable? Or am I missing something fundamental?
As for the returns, for now I think I will skip the SCUDS and instead have each of the 4 returns Y into two directions. One tube on each will point "down to the right" and the other will be more "across to the left" I think I can build a decent flow pattern with that.
Closed loops are exactly that. the water that's in them stays unless somehow exposed to air. So just ensure during a power off situation the suction or discharge for the closed loops are below the lowest level the tank will fall during a power outage. Also you'll need to design in some form of venting during filling/maintenance. But no standpipe persay as in an overflow.
If you look around on some builds on RC you'll find some examples of the strainers people have used. Just make sure you can reach it if you need to clean it. I would focus more on one suction point: 1) less places you need to screen and 2) less piping and 3) less likelyhood of one side getting the dominant suction and therefore flow. Just make it big enough to match the CL pump's inlet or larger depending on the length of the pipe run.
I think you meant you are going to skip the SCWD, not SCUDS? If I am incorrect, what is a SCUDS? Yes I too plan to run my sump returns the same way with 3/4" loc-line split into two 6" loc-line lengths to nozzles on each side.
Feel free to PM me if you have an specific piping or flow design questions.

SCUDS are missiles. Used for blowing up your tank when you get frustrated with it.
