I bought a 1/4hp aqua logic chiller for my 120g running 2-250w MH bulbs w/ pc's, a mag18 & mag7pump, with the thought that it would be essential to keep the heat under control. I have yet to use it. Just a couple of fans and a good temp controller have kept my temp. in check. I do run my reef at between 79-81 degrees. Just trying to say that evaporation through fans really does help a lot. We do keep our house A/C set on 80 degrees, and I'm sure that helps on those hot Chico days:)

you could try the place I work for we are the cheapest in town and are always working and fixing different things. i dont know what they say about a chiller but i know price is the cheapest in towngive us call and we can tell what we can do our labor is pretty cheap. the companys name is appliance resale in chico on 8th call between 8 and 5 phone = 530 343 4904 or just bring it in and talk to someone my name is Paul but the refigeration guy is nathian and hes been doin refigeration for like 13 years so hes a good bet for getting a cheap repair i dont think we've ever worked on a chiller but i have talked to him about making a diy one and he seems to know alot about how to even make something from nothin good bet give em a try I just called; the guy I spoke to (owner?) was unfamiliar with chilllers, and initially said that he didn't think they could do anything. By the end of the conversation, however, he said that if I bring it in next week between Monday and Friday they'd take a look at it. I'm hopeful. It looks like it may need a fuse and a line replaced (one of the couplings is rusted; it looks like this may be where it was leaking from). Other than that, I'm hopeful that the unit is functional. Thanks for the number!

That, coupled with a Mag 12 and Mag 18 in the sump, 500w of MH on the display, and another 212w of light on the sump and supplementals on display would get mighty toasty...

Why such big pumps?

Why such big pumps? The Mag 12 is powering a 3' Tall Lifereef Skimmer (rated at 1200 to 1500 gph). The Mag 18 is powering a return of flow in four different directions; through two different refugiums and against 6' of head to the two return lines in the main display.

Update: Well, we replaced the fuse holder so that it would accept regular fuses and not fuses that had to be special ordered from JBJ. We hooked the chiller up last night.... and IT WORKS! I couldn't believe it. No leaks. And it dropped the water temp really really fast. I'm going to back flush it with vinegar this weekend and take it from there!

Good to hear. Leave it hooked up a while to make sure it doesn't have a slow leak that builds up over time from pressure
