cyanobacteria outbreak
Lake Natron in Tanzania.

Holy Cyano Crap Batman!!!, I like the plane's shadow for some scale. Further evidence most like from human pollution setting off rampant biological extremes. Go Humans - 9-10Billion by 2050 :D :D :D

WOW that is sad!! We truely are destroying our own world!! Leave it up to humans to destroy something that has been here longer then us!!

What the big deal? Just toss some Chemmi-Clean in there and do a water change the next day.

Chris Bovia- 12-01-2008

Hilarious Jody... I know you are bringing a sarcastic point here... but in ironic retrospect. I suppose if the cause of this was actually from human pollution, the cost to prevent this pollution would most likely have be less then the amount of chemi-clean to clean this up. But then again, Chemi-clean works only if you remove most of the cyano slime before starting the treatment. And you'd need some form of circulation to get the treatment spread out. Further, after paying the enormous amounts of chemi-clean and proper distribution, how much will it cost to do the huge amounts of clean, brinewater to do the water change and even further, what to do with the 20% water left over? Plus, at this scale, will one dose do the trick? Not likley... start all over again. $$$$$$$$ Again, using technology is not always the best solution. Even in humor. I just hope more and more people will wake up to the fact that technology will probably not catch up to *save us*. Further, more and more science is proving that going simple and back to natural ways is better than pouring in more medications and tech solutions. As far as some of the groundwater cleanup situations I work - natural attenuation works better than anything we could throw at it. My name is Chris and I'm done now.... :D

Obama will fix it!

yeah, he should be able to part the red sea

Some articles on the subject... It looks like the cyano is actually what helps sustain the HUGE population of flamingo's that live there on this lake rather than this being on the ocean. Without the cyano it would destroy the lakes population of flamingo's and thus the estimate of 75% of the worlds flamingo's would have to find other homes.... It's rather humorous how the threats from people are actually to add an influx of freshwater to the lake which would reduce the salinity and kill off the cyano... Funny how this Nuisance is actually what's sustaining a large population of Flamingo's almost single handedly. It's actually a protected wetlands now to make sure the cyano and flamingo populations stay steady... Awfully funny IMO. Nothing is getting destroyed by this... Life is thriving due to it in this instance. Not to say issues with Cyano in other places hasn't become a problem but in this istance it's not... http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/enlarge/lake-natron-photography.html http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=6446 http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/nature/pollution-in-paradise-flamingos-vs-the-factory-822172.html

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Chris Bovia- 12-01-2008

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! No, Not the sky... but flamingo S**T. :D Matt, there you are!!! and thanks for the links. Curious, I'm not a biologist (wife is) but I thought cyanobacteria needed some thing else besides salt (and light)to exist let alone thrive as the article suggests. Clearly though the nearby volcano could be the source of any needed additional elements or compounds to make cyano thrive. Each year I learn more about how important the great california valley is to the migration of millions of birds, and further when you see rice and other fields flooded this time of year is simply for them. (well, before we built dams, it would more or less flood the valley in a similar manor)Another thing that humans have recognized as an ecological need and as long as we have the water supply to flood these fields, I'm sure we'll keep it going. As my previous post stated - in so many ways natural attenuation (in this case, flamingos) may be the best solution. :D :D

Wow. Am I the only one who just thought it was a cool picture?

Chris Bovia- 12-01-2008

Yup very cool photo!!! nonetheless. But does it ever stop there....?

Interesting article. http://cleantechnica.com/2008/08/26/cyanobacteria-the-next-big-biofuel/

Chris Bovia- 12-01-2008

Cool Soon we could power our pumps from the cyano growth off from the lights!!! Ha Ha... :D

Lake Natron in Tanzania. Looks like my fish tank. Chris can verify.
