Ooops Flooded my house
Genius at work. I have my frag tank connected to my main tank with a siphon hose jammed into a pump, and no time with school to make it the way I want. Should have spent the time. The hose came out and drained my 85 gallon tank to 3" from the bottom, flooding my office space. :-( :-) Got a new laminate floor now instead of carpet 8) :-) didn't loose any coral or fish in the process of refilling and saving my tank. only lost 3 rose mili frags due to corals eating them when they got pushed together in the frag tank to make room while work was in progress. does anybody know how long corals can live out of water, its got to be over 2hrs.

wow! thats gnarly! im glad most everything survived but the mess sure sucks. the tide is 6 hrs right? arent some reefs exposed for low tide? i believe thats why they excrete a slime coating,to preserve moisture. dont quote me on that, but it makes sense to me.

WOW! Well that's good to hear your loss wasn't too bad. I'm awfully surprised you didn't have more loss than that but that's awesome. The laminate should be better with the spills anyways. Most of the corals wouldnt be exposed at an low tide but I know a lot of zoanthids can be without water for a significant amount of time without water... As for the SPS and others who knows.

Well Taylor doesn't run halides but still I can imagine that's not a common thing to have them do fine after that long.... How did you manage to have enough water made up that quickly?

Some SPS corals can go 6+ hours without water. As Josh stated the slime they secrete keeps them moist along with keeping crap from settling on them and Algae growing on them. The problem you have in captivity is UV burn from our lights. You would be surprised at how much UV rays the water blocks.

I definitely saw plenty of slime, and my pregnant wife and room mates helped mix water while I made trips to the fish store to get DI water, my large monti and slimed for at least a half hour after there was water in the tank. My roommates caught the pumps and unplugged them too. I'd hate to have to replace them too.

Wow! Sounds like you averted a major catastrophe. I too have had a pump hose come off, drained the small sump, and found the pump making loud gurgling, unhealthy noises. Messy to say the least. I swear I wasn't foretelling the future when I asked about your carpet. Nonetheless, glad you were able to save everything.

Yeah that was pretty odd when chris mentioned that and now to have it happen.... Very Ironic!

There's a reason why I have a cutout of a scrap of linoleum under my stands that make a small bath tub effect to hold back a small spill as all but one of my six tank locations has been on carpet. Though I have been known to forecast anomolies. I would rather think it's my engineering mind that runs as many what if this happened scenerios that I eventually cover most bases. But then again, that's just what I think... Believe me, I don't always catch things. And often it is the ones that I did think about but didn't do anything about when said anomoly occurs that bug me the most!
