Suggestions for the club
So let's just say over the past couple of days I've started several posts but decided not to send any of them. But I'd like to pull some of the details out of them now. Here is what I think the CRC needs to do to get back going again. 1) Spend the necessary money to get rid of the advertisements on .org. 2) Increase the Raffle. Do this by mail merging a form letter to 100+ vendors and mail asking for item donations for raffles. Cost $50 (Stamps, envelopes, & Paper) and member/officer time. Then designate someone (PR) to use some of the raffle money to scout out deals from LFS, members, others for potentially live and discounted items or Gift Certificates. This will draw an increase in attendance at the meetings. 3) Incorporation is complete. Work to compete the tax-exempt status and get what needs to be done to get our business status complete. 4) Post signs at all LFS about meeting and website, post advertisements on CraigsList a week before the meeting, Post meeting announcements on the .org website. 5) Have a frag swap but only members (yes RDD guys can play). Someone's house or garage? Make it small, worthwhile and conveneint such that it does not conflict with others so we get the scraps. Let's say November 8? (see other thread) Then once we get our feet wet, get all our business business situated, we get bigger, we can think bigger. 6) Work on getting speakers for our club meetings that we already have in the vicinity like Frank Burr or even Charles Delbeck as he is now out of SF. 7) Schedule Tank tour Saturdays where we go to look at about three or four tanks as a group field trip. I think a Paradise tank tour is in order. 8) When we get the ball rolling again with the meetings, we can get those business cards printed and go around on evening walks. When people have their houses opened up for the cooler evening air, you'll be able to unavoidably see who has actinics blaring out of a window. Simply stop by and drop off the card which will have our meeting time and website. Plus, we could put these in participating LFS's which I've always said is our best source for new members. 9) Field trips to Sacramento or Bay Area for LFS buy days. 10... that's it off the top of my head but that's a lot for us to do. Anyone else have any suggestions?

I think we need more advertisements at the LFS. Cards at the front desk would get literally hundreds of views per day. We need a steady influx of "fresh blood", and a club format that is welcoming to new members.... which I think we have for the most part.

Yes, I think I'll try to get those cards ordered once and for all. Thanks and I too agree with what you said about the cards and greater views at LFS' that are willing to post our signs and cards.

I see it as being a mutually beneficial situation. More people join the club, which is awesome; LFS have more customers, and spend less time answering beginner type questions.

I really don't want to become the guy that lurks around LFS and ambushes innocent people passing by though, so it would definitely help if we had cards and/or signs. :)

I really don't want to become the guy that lurks around LFS and ambushes innocent people passing by  How did you know I did this??? Yes, I agree much better way. I don't want people to think that I'm trying to sell them Amway or anything. So I think this is a better approach. Glad to see you back tylt33!

I think we agree it's a better approach when it's presented like "Oh hey, you like fish too? Check out this sign over here, this is a pretty helpful group." Rather than "Hey, I happened to be eavesdropping, and you sound like you should join my club!" Sometimes it's hard to restrain oneself though. I really think people could benefit by knowing there are other reef geeks out there! I'm back, working on setting up my 120g. Got almost all the pieces, after four+ months of gathering them. Lol.
